2 Corinthians 10:4-5 states, “The weapons we fight with are not the weapons of the world. On the contrary, they have divine power to demolish strongholds. We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.” A stronghold is a mental fortress—a deeply entrenched belief, mindset, or argument that resists God’s truth. It starts with a lie you’ve believed that develops into a sin pattern you begin to live with. Strongholds can include things like fear, anger, pride, spiritual passivity, lust, selfishness, doubt, legalism, idolatry and more. These strongholds hinder your intimacy with God, your obedience towards God, the amount of love you feel towards others, your peace and your freedom. This article will introduce you to the concept of strongholds. At the bottom of the article there are links with steps for tearing down various strongholds. How Strongholds Form
Strongholds usually develop over time. They sometimes feel deeply entrenched, but no matter how deeply rooted they are, God has the power to tear them down. This is the progression of a stronghold formation:

This pattern has happened to all of us in some way. Thankfully God is both gracious and powerful. He will partner with us to get freedom as we lean into Him and the biblical principals in this article.
God Has Given You Weapons
God has given us what we need to destroy strongholds. The Bible emphasizes that our weapons are not human strategies or self-help solutions. Instead, we are given weapons empowered by God Himself. Some of these biblical weapons include:
- The Word of God (Hebrews 4:12)
- Prayer and fasting (Matthew 17:21)
- Confession and repentance (1 John 1:9; Acts 3:19)
- Authority in Christ over demonic oppression (Luke 10:19)
- Faith (Ephesians 6:16)
- Humility and submission to God (James 4:6–7)
- Obedience (Ephesians 6:14)
These aren’t abstract spiritual ideas—they are active and powerful means of dismantling lies, bringing more freedom, and bringing us into deeper intimacy with Christ.
The Importance of Renewing Your Mind
As we go through life, we will come across things from the world, sinful nature and the demonic realm that will suggest subtle, sneaky lies to us. When those lies slip past our defenses and begin to take root in our mind, they have potential to form into a stronghold. Since every stronghold begins in the mind, it is vastly important to renew your mind. Romans 12:2, states, “Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.” In the same way that a stronghold is formed by a lie that progresses into a pattern of bondage, a renewed mind is formed by God's truth which progresses into a pattern of more freedom, love, intimacy and obedience with God. The progression of a renewed mind can go like this:

It takes time, intentionality and a lifestyle of immersing ourselves in the word of God in order for our minds to renew. God knew this as He addressed the Israelites in Deuteronomy 6:1-9. It says, “Listen, O Israel! The Lord is our God, the Lord alone. You must love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, and all your strength. Commit yourselves wholeheartedly to these commands I am giving you today. Teach them diligently to your children—speak of them when you are at home and when you are on the road, when you lie down and when you rise up. Tie them to your hands and wear them on your forehead as reminders. Write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates.” Similarly, as we live in step with the Lord, we can fill our lives with the word of God to saturate our mind with His truth. Over time, the power of the Holy Spirit and God’s word will transform your thinking and your life.
The Importance of Purifying Your Heart
If you want to walk in the freedom God intended for you, purifying your heart is essential. Many strongholds remain because our hearts are weighed down by unrepentant sin, hidden wounds, or demonic oppression. But God has provided a clear path to cleansing and restoration—through confession, repentance, and, when necessary, deliverance from demonic oppression.
- Confession: Confession is the first step. “If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness” (1 John 1:9). Confession in a relational exchange in which you come to God and apologize for engaging in sin, then He forgives you and cleanses you.
- Repentance: Repentance goes a step further and involves changing your mind and actions away from sin and towards God. “Repent, then, and turn to God, so that your sins may be wiped out, that times of refreshing may come from the Lord” (Acts 3:19). When it comes to strongholds, the deeper the repentance, the deeper your freedom will be.
- Deliverance: Then in some cases, it may be necessary to command that demons leave you so that they no longer negatively influence you. James 4:7 says, “Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.” While not every issue we deal with is accompanied by a demon, there will be times when negative mental, physical and spiritual symptoms leave immediately after commanding a demon to leave.
By partnering with God to purify your heart, strongholds lose their grip which increases your freedom, intimacy and obedience towards God.
