Enhancing Your Brain Chemistry

Enhancing Your Fulfillment

Details:

When we don't have clear values, goals, and priorities, our brains tend to default to survival mode—reacting to whatever feels urgent instead of focusing on what’s truly important. This mental autopilot can feel like drifting: we go through the motions, fill our time with distractions, and end our days feeling busy but strangely unfulfilled. Without intentional direction, our minds are more likely to spiral into stress, anxiety, and burnout because there's no clear internal compass guiding our decisions. But when we do know our core values—and intentionally align our goals and actions around them—our brains respond with greater clarity, motivation, and resilience. We’re less scattered, more focused, and more energized. Neurologically, it becomes easier to filter out distractions and stay on track when we have a clear “why” behind our daily choices. Living in alignment with your values doesn’t just improve productivity—it grounds you with a deeper sense of purpose, meaning, and emotional well-being. That’s why I believe everyone should complete a values assessment at least once a year. Life has a way of pulling us into routine, and without reflection, we can slowly lose sight of what matters most. A values assessment is a practical tool that helps you recalibrate—reconnecting your actions with your purpose, and making life feel more rich, full, and meaningful. You might be thinking, “That sounds great, but what exactly is a values assessment?” Let me walk you through it.

The Values Assessment

  • Rate from 0 to 10 how important each of these values are to you: Emotional Health, Physical Health, Spirituality, Family, Friends, Romance, Leisure, Work, Learning and Community Service.
  • Rank these values from most to least important.
  • To start, do this exercise while focusing on your top 3 values while setting the other 7 values aside for now.  If you try to focus on more than that, it can feel overwhelming and hard to manage.
  • For each value you want to focus on, rate how well you feel you are engaging with that part of your life from 0 to 10.
  • Write out 3 action steps you want to consistently live out so that you would feel like you are fully connecting and engaging with that value.

  • Have family dinners at the kitchen table to talk about our day 5 times per week
  • Spend time with my kids without electronics for at least 20 minutes every day
  • Plan one fun, family activity per month

#3 Value: Work

  • How important is work to me from 0 to 10? 8 out of 10

  • Break my big project down into daily manageable chunks and work on it for 3 hours each day
  • Genuinely focus on and ask about my coworkers’ lives

Final Thoughts

In a fast-paced world full of noise and demands, clarity is a gift we give ourselves—and a values assessment is one of the simplest ways to rediscover it. It’s not about perfection, but intentionality. When you take time to identify what matters most and create practical steps to live it out, you stop drifting and start directing your life with purpose. Over time, that clarity compounds—leading to more meaningful relationships, deeper fulfillment, and a greater sense of peace. So take the time. Revisit your values. Recenter your life. Your future self will thank you.
