Knowing God

Knowing God is, without question, the most important and profound pursuit in life. It is the foundation of all meaning, purpose, and fulfillment. At its core, knowing God is not just about gathering knowledge, but about entering into a relationship with the Creator of the universe. The mystery of God’s nature is so vast and His being so incomprehensible that mere words can never capture the totality of who He is. While we can know God in an intimate and personal way, we will never fully exhaust the depths of His greatness. This dual reality—that we can know God deeply, but never exhaustively—is a tension that shapes the life of faith. We can know certain truths about God, which help us build an accurate understanding of His character, but these truths only point us toward a deeper, more relational knowledge of Him. In knowing God, we engage both the intellectual and the relational, seeking to understand His nature while also experiencing His presence in our daily lives.

Attributes of God

The attributes of God help us understand who God is, though they can never fully encapsulate His infinite nature. God is omniscient, knowing all things—past, present, and future—with perfect clarity. He is omnipotent, possessing all power and authority, and His will is unstoppable. God is omnipresent, present everywhere at all times, which means no part of creation is beyond His reach. His eternality means He has no beginning or end, and He exists outside the constraints of time. God is immutable, unchanging in His essence and character, offering a steady foundation for those who trust in Him. God is also holy, separate from all that is evil, pure in every way. At the same time, He is just, always right in His judgments, and merciful, offering grace and forgiveness to those who turn to Him. He is loving, seeking the good of His creation and desiring a relationship with His people. Understanding these attributes helps us form a more accurate view of God, but we must also approach Him with awe, knowing that no human attempt to describe his attributes will fully capture the awesomeness of His being.

The Trinity: One God in Three Persons

One of the most foundational aspects of knowing God is understanding the doctrine of the Trinity—God as three distinct persons: the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Though the word "Trinity" is not found in Scripture, it encapsulates the biblical teaching that God is one in essence but exists in three persons who are co-equal and co-eternal. Similar to how you can see the Bible verses above showing Jesus and God are one, the Bible references how the Holy Spirit is also one with them (Genesis 1:26; Matthew 3:16-17; Matthew 28:19; Acts 5:3-4).The Father is the Creator, the source of all life and existence, the one who initiates the divine plan for the world. The Son, Jesus Christ, is God incarnate, the Word made flesh who reveals the Father to humanity through His life, death, and resurrection. The Holy Spirit is the ongoing presence of God in the world, empowering believers, convicting them of sin, and guiding them into truth. The Trinity teaches us that God is not solitary or distant; He exists in perfect, loving relationship within Himself, and this relational nature extends to us. Through the Trinity, we come to know God as a relational, dynamic, and communal being, inviting us into His fellowship and love.

Father God

God the Father is the origin and source of all life, the One who lovingly planned creation and initiated redemption. He is the sovereign Ruler of all things, yet He desires to be known as “Abba”—a term of intimate relationship and trust (Romans 8:15). As the Father, He adopts us into His family through Jesus Christ (Ephesians 1:5), lavishing us with grace, providing for our needs, disciplining us in love, and inviting us into a secure relationship with Him. He is not distant or detached, but actively involved in our lives with wisdom and care. To know God as Father is to experience His faithful love, His protective care, and His deep desire for communion with His children. Everything He does flows from His perfect will and character.

Jesus

The person of Jesus Christ is the fullest and clearest revelation of God to humanity. As both fully God and fully man, He uniquely bridges the gap between the divine and the human, revealing God's nature in a way that no other person or concept could. Jesus is the eternal Word made flesh (John 1:1, 14), and in Him, all the fullness of God dwells in bodily form (Colossians 2:9). He came not only to reveal God's character but also to accomplish the redemptive work necessary for humanity to be reconciled with God. As He Himself stated, “I and the Father are one” (John 10:30), showing His unity with God, and He identified as the great "I AM" (John 8:58), affirming His divine identity. Through His teachings, Jesus demonstrated the heart of God, emphasizing love, mercy, and truth. His sacrificial death on the cross serves as the ultimate act of God's love, paying the penalty for humanity’s sin and opening the way for forgiveness and eternal life. In His resurrection, Jesus triumphed over sin and death, showing that He is the Savior and the Son of God. To know Jesus is to know God intimately, for in Him, God’s nature is perfectly revealed (John 14:9). As believers grow in their relationship with Jesus, they encounter God Himself, experiencing both His love and His holiness in ways that transform their lives.

Holy Spirit

The Holy Spirit is the personal presence of God living within every believer, empowering them to live the life God desires. He is not a force or an abstract influence but the third person of the Trinity, fully God and deeply relational. Jesus promised the Holy Spirit as our Helper, Comforter, and Guide (John 14:26; 16:13). The Spirit convicts the world of sin, reveals truth, and glorifies Christ. He gives spiritual gifts for the building up of the Church, produces fruit such as love, joy, peace, and patience (Galatians 5:22–23), and enables believers to walk in holiness. Through the Spirit, we experience the nearness of God in real and tangible ways, are reminded of our identity as children of God, and are empowered to live boldly for Christ. To know the Holy Spirit is to experience God’s active work in and through us each day.

The Journey of Knowing Him

To begin a relationship with God, one must first recognize their need for Him. The Bible teaches that all people are separated from God due to sin, but through faith in Jesus Christ—His life, death, and resurrection—people can be reconciled to God. This relationship begins when a person repents of their sin, believes in Jesus as Savior, and surrenders their life to Him. Once this relationship is established, knowing God becomes an ongoing journey of intimacy. While the initial step of faith brings a person into communion with God, the relationship deepens over time through prayer, reading Scripture, worship, and fellowship with other believers. Throughout life, this relationship is dynamic, with God continually revealing more of Himself to those who seek Him. The Holy Spirit, indwelling every believer, guides and empowers this journey, helping believers live in alignment with God’s will. Ultimately, the knowledge of God will culminate in eternity, where believers will experience Him face-to-face and know Him in the fullest, most intimate way possible, without the limitations of time, sin, or earthly understanding. Until that day, the journey of knowing God is a lifelong pursuit, marked by continual discovery, deepening love, and unshakable hope.
